Our Story

We’re Luke and Nikki, the family behind Grand Rapids Compost.

Our work is rooted in a lifelong connection to nature and a belief in biodynamic principles — the idea that healthy soil, plants, animals, and people all work together as part of one living system. When we care for the soil, everything else thrives.

In 2010, we started our family farm just outside Grand Rapids with the goal of growing food the right way — using holistic methods that build healthy soil and produce incredibly flavorful, nutrient-dense food.

Over the years our farm has grown to include:

• Organically grown produce
• Open-pollinated spring garden seedlings
• Custom organic garden services
• Vermiculture (worm composting) supplies
• Heritage pork raised responsibly

Composting has always been at the heart of what we do.

Also in 2010, we began collecting food scraps from local restaurants. That experience allowed us to deepen our knowledge of composting organic materials, raising worms, and creating rich planting soils that bring life back to the land.

Grand Rapids Compost grew out of that experience.

We created the service to make composting simple and accessible for our community. By offering residential curbside food scrap collection, we help our neighbors keep organic waste out of landfills and return those nutrients back to the soil where they belong.

For us, composting isn’t just waste management — it’s a way to close the loop, strengthen our local food system, and care for the place we call home.

Every bucket we collect is one small step toward healthier soil, stronger gardens, and a more sustainable Grand Rapids.
